A New Holder (Bar) and Adjustable Carbide Shanks for a Wide Range of Internal Applications
ISCAR's new holder bar, known as the PASSPORT, is an innovative, universal tool capable of holding a variety of solid carbide bars and steel shanks for internal boring applications in small diameter holes. The system utilizes various bars and shanks to perform all kinds of internal turning options, such as longitudinal boring and turning, back turning, profiling, undercutting, grooving, and threading. The solid carbide shanks provides rigidity, high stiffness, and resistance to bending and deflection, all of which result in dimensional accuracy and high surface quality.

The PASSPORT holder bar has two different bore diameters, 6 and 8 mm (.236 and .315''), one on each end of the tool thereby enabling the use of different carbide shank sizes. The overhang of the carbide bars can be adjusted in accordance with the required depth of the machined bore. With the 6 mm (.236") diameter shank, the depth of boring range is 16 to 42 mm (.630 to 1.653") using the CHAMGROOVE GIQR/L 8 inserts. With the 8 mm (.315") diameter shank, the boring depth range is 16 to 56 mm (.630 to 2.20") with the GIQR/L 11 inserts.

The PASSPORT system functions well with extended overhangs due to the carbide shanks and strong clamping. However, utilizing the smallest possible overhang and selecting the best machining conditions can optimize machining performance for internal applications.

Two screws secure carbide shanks - one set located at either end of the holder. The same holder can be used for right- and left-handed shanks or bars for machining in both directions.

It is well known that breakage or damage of small boring bars used for small diameters can be expected in internal turning due to instability, vibration, and chip flow problems. The PASSPORT system is very economical in that it eliminates the need to replace expensive carbide holders by utilizing interchangeable, short carbide bars. The new system can be used with ISCAR's standard CHAMGROOVE GIQR/L8 and 11 inserts for grooving, boring, chamfering, threading, undercutting, and profiling. The system also accommodates PICCO-CUT solid carbide bars, capable of penetrating bore diameters as small as 2.8 mm (.11"). The PASSPORT can also use a range of standard MGSIL/R 06W boring bars with small ISO inserts for turning and threading. Adjustable carbide boring bars MGCH with the CHAMELEON inserts are available in 6 and 8 mm (.236 and .315") diameters.

The new PASSPORT system is available as a kit. Each kit contains 1 PASSPORT holder MGPCO-16-6-8, 3 standard ISO carbide shanks, 1 PICCO-CUT minibar, 12 CHAMGROOVE holders, 4 different CHAMGROOVE inserts and 1 small Trigon turning insert. The kit is available in both metric and inch options.

The new ISCAR PASSPORT system with small carbide boring bars improves performance and reduces stock requirements significantly.
